RIGGING AND SIGNAL PERSON CLASS

We will soon be offering for the first time a Rigging and Signal Person Class.  Here is the class description:
  • Beginning February 9, 2010, MN OSHA is requiring that any person involved with the rigging and/or signaling of cranes be a Qualified Rigger or Qualified Signal Person.  The Training Center will be offering training classes on these qualifications starting in early January. Class length will be four hours which includes an exam on each qualification. Passing the exams ensures that you have the qualifications required to be a Qualified Rigger or Qualified Signal Person. These classes will be offered evenings, days, and Saturdays so when you call in to register, please indicate your preference.

SERVICING ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS II CLASS STARTING SOON

SES II Class will be starting January 11, 2011. Here is the class description:
  • SES II picks up where SES I leaves off, going more in depth in all the fundamental areas of HVAC Service, such as gas heating, air conditioning, and air distribution. Plenty of time will be spent on wiring diagrams, troubleshooting, and hands on work in this 88-hour class. North American Technician excellence (N.A.T.E) and Industry Competency Exam (I.C.E.) certifications will be attainable at the conclusion of this class.

LOAD CALCULATIONS & DUCT DESIGN CLASS

Load Calculations & Duct Design is a 16-hour class focusing on the proper method to calculate heat loss for a residential home using a Manual J workbook and spreadsheet. Information from the spreadsheet will be used to calculate the heat loss for each room and the entire house. Duct design will incorporate information from the heat loss spreadsheet to design a duct system to distribute the correct amount of air to each room to satisfy the load. 
NOTE: This class qualifies for NATE continuing education hours.

INTRODUCTION TO AUTOCAD CLASS

We have an Introduction to AutoCAD Class scheduled to start on January 6.  However, we need a few more members to sign up to ensure that we have enough students to hold the class as scheduled.  Here is the class description:
  • AutoCAD is a Computer Aided Design program used to create drawings. This 48-hour class is designed to teach you the basics of creating and working with CAD drawings. You will learn how to draw on the computer and plot out the finished drawing on a plotter. This is an excellent preparatory class for someone interested in doing detailing and planning work. Good detailers are in demand!

MSHA (Mine Safety & Health Administration) Class STARTS 12/14

An MSHA Card is mandatory for a lot of the work coming available in the northern part of Local 10. This 24-hour class meets MSHA requirements for initial training of new personnel without previous mining experience. Curriculum includes: Rights of Miners, introduction to the work environment, transportation/ground control, communication systems, respiratory devices, hazard recognition, evacuation plans, and more. An OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 card is a prerequisite for this class.

To obtain your OSHA 10 Certification Card, you need only attend the first two classes (November 29 & 30).
To obtain your OSHA 30 Certification Card, you need to attend all six classes (November 29, 30, December 8, 9, 15, & 16).

GREEN CONSTRUCTION AWARENESS - LEED ASSOCIATE CLASSES

Two classes are starting soon.  Come for the first two evenings (Green Construction Awareness) or continue on for the next four classes and learn what it takes to get your LEED Green Associate credential.

DUCT SIZING CALCULATOR USE

This eight-hour class will be scheduled just as soon as a few more members sign up.  Here is the class description:
  • This class will focus on the use of the SMWIA/Trane Ductulator, the industry standard in circular slide rule airflow calculations. The Ductulator aids in laying out air handling duct systems and determining proper duct sizes. We will be using the ITI version of the Ductulator and some class time will be spent on aspect ratio, friction loss, duct sizing, and some of the formulas and other useful design information printed on the back side of the Ductulator.

FUNDAMENTAL OF CONTROLS & DIRECT DIGITAL CONTROLS

This class is a basic overview of controls, including Direct Digital Controls (DDC), designed for Service, TAB, and Power Limited Technician oriented individuals.   • This 24-hour class is designed to introduce you to basic computer use beginning with turning on the power to surfing the Internet.   • Building Codes require the design of an integrated system of building features to protect occupants from fire and smoke.   • Lagging is the process of covering and protecting insulation with sheet metal, plastic, and other materials. This class will provide you with some much needed basic skills in this aspect of our trade. There is a tremendous amount of power plant, refinery, and other industrial type work that is in the works within Local 10 and also nationwide. These types of projects typically require a lot of lagging fabrication and installation.

ENERGY STAR PROGRAM

We need a few more members to sign up for this eight-hour Energy Star Program Class scheduled for the evenings of September 30th & October 7th. Here is the class description:
  • Green starts with energy! Energy Star is a joint program of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Dept of Energy. This program delivers the technical information and tools that organizations need to choose energy efficient solutions and managements practices. Most of the time in this class will be spent on the www.energystar.gov website becoming familiar with and navigating the various areas of this busy site, as well as using some of the interactive energy loss/savings calculators on it.

TESTING, ADJUSTING, and BALANCING AIR SYSTEMS (BASIC)

TAB 1 (Basic) Class is scheduled to start on Monday, September 20 and there are still a few openings! Here is the class description:
  • This 72-hour class is designed to introduce the basics of TAB work to an individual, with lots of hands on applications. You will learn how to set up and use flow hoods, manometers, and many other testing instruments used daily by TAB technicians. In addition, you will learn how to test and balance various types of mechanical equipment along with their related duct systems. This is an excellent class for people who want to learn how to do TAB work as well as those people currently doing it.
NOTE: TAB 1 Class will be followed by TAB 2 (Advanced), TAB 3 (Hydronic Systems) and TABP 1 (Tab Technician Test Prep).

GREEN CONSTRUCTION AWARENESS - LEED GREEN ASSOCIATE CLASS


This class has really gotten the attention of our members, with more than 120 currently signed up! This is our BIGGEST CLASS EVER! Have YOU signed up yet?


We have one class in progress and will be scheduling more soon. This is an eight-hour class that will extend to 24-hours for some students. The first eight hours of the class are devoted to educating you on Sustainability, LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design), Green Construction Practices and Projects, and the dos and don'ts associated with them. You can be a big asset on these projects as opposed to an uninformed liability. Those wishing to pursue the LEED Green Associate credential will then go on to the remaining sessions for further training. Please know in advance that pursuing and attaining the LEED GA credential requires a substantial amount of self-study time, which this class will help prepare you for, as well as some $. The exam for the LEED GA credential is administered by the Green Building Certification Institute. Completion of our class does NOT get you the LEED GA credential, but it WILL do a very good job preparing you to take the exam that will get you the credential.

Duct Construction Standards / HVAC-SMACNA Class will be held on Monday evenings, June 21, 28, & July 6. Here is the class description:
  • This 12-hour class will focus on the use of the SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards Manual. Specifically, students will review sample plans and specifications, learn how to determine pressure classifications for duct systems, and reference the rectangular duct construction schedules to determine adequate gauges, transverse joints, and intermediate reinforcement requirements. Becoming comfortable with the use of these schedules is the primary intent of this class.

Green Construction Awareness - LEED Green Associate Class

We are offering a Green/LEED Class on Mondays, June 7 & 14 from 5:00 to 9:00 PM. This eight-hour class will extend to 24-hours for some students.

Refrigerant Handling - Hands On Class has been scheduled for Mondays and Tuesdays, June 14 through June 22 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Here is the description:
  • In this 16-hour class you will install, charge, reclaim, and recover refrigerant in a split system. Component identification and review of the refrigerant cycle is also covered. You must have the CFC card in order to take this class. This class qualifies for NATE Continuing Education Hours.

Gas Piping (Flexible) Installation Class starting soon!

Gas Piping (Flexible) Installation Class will be held from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the following Mondays: April 26, May 10, & May 24. This 12-hour class will include the Gastite, TracPipe, and Wardflex training programs as put on by the manufacturer's representatives. These three brands of corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) are the most prevalent in use in this part of the country for flexible fuel gas piping systems. This class will include hands-on installation of tubing with black pipe fittings on a furnace and a pressure test.

Estimating (HVAC) / Design/Build HVAC Systems Class Starting Soon!

An Estimating (HVAC) / Design/Build HVAC Systems Class will be held Mondays, April 19 through June 14, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. This 32-hour class will provide the core knowledge necessary to competently design some basic HVAC systems for various types of building construction and occupancies. Servicing Environmental Systems II Class has openings!

WE HAVE JUST STARTED AN SES II CLASS AND THERE ARE STILL OPENINGS! Class meets Friday and Saturday mornings in April, then switches to a full day on Fridays only through June 11.
  • SES II picks up where SES I leaves off, going more in depth in all the fundamental areas of HVAC service, such as gas heating, a/c, and air distribution. Plenty of time will be spent on wiring diagrams, troubleshooting, and hands on work. NATE and ICE certifications will be attainable at the conclusion of this class.

Mechanical Code Class starting April 7

There are still openings in a daytime Mechanical Code Class that will run on the following four Wednesdays: April 7, April 21, May 5, and May 19, 2010. This class starts at 7:00 a.m and runs until 3:00 p.m. Here is the class description:
  • This class is based on the new International Mechanical Code adopted by the state of Minnesota and will help prepare you for the Twin Cities Warm Air & Ventilation Competency exam. It is also very helpful for foremen and superintendents as well as detailers and estimators.

TAB Technician Test Prep Class starting soon!

TAB Technician Test Prep Class is scheduled to start on April 5 from 5:00 until 9:00 p.m. There is still room in this class! Prerequisites are completion of the TAB-1 Class or equivalent field experience in testing and balancing. Here is the class description:
  • This 16-hour class is designed to prepare people to take the ITI Certified TAB Technician written exams for air and hydronics. The exams will be scheduled for a date after the conclusion of this class. Class dates are: April 5, 7, 12, & 14.

TAB - BASIC - we have a few openings in upcoming class...

Testing, Adjusting and Balancing Air Systems (Basic) Class is going to be scheduled soon and will be held on Fridays and Saturdays for 4-weeks during the day. Here is the description of this class:
  • This class is designed to introduce the basics of TAB work with lots of hands-on applications. You will learn how to set up and use flow hoods, manometers, and many other testing instruments used daily by TAB technicians. You will also learn how to test and balance various types of mechanical equipment along with their related duct systems. This is an excellent class for people who want to learn how to do TAB work as well as for those people currently doing it.

Gas Burner Code Review Class needs a few more people...

We have a Gas Burner Code Review Class coming up that is almost full enough to schedule. We just need a few more people to sign up! It is a 16-hour evening class. Here is the class description:
  • This is a basic course that will help you to better understand the gas safety controls of a residential furnace and their operation. This class will also cover proper gas piping procedures, pipe sizing, clocking, meter and gas troubleshooting, and combustion analysis (Orsat tests).

LAGGING CLASS needs a few more people

We are just a few people short of starting a new LAGGING CLASS. This is a 40-hour evening class. Here is the description:
  • Lagging is the process of covering and protecting insulation with sheet metal, plastic, and other materials. This class will provide you with some much needed basic skills in this aspect of our trade. There is a tremendous amount of power plant, refinery, and other industrial type work that is in the works within Local 10 and also nationwide. These types of projects typically require a lot of lagging fabrication and installation.
