MECHANICAL CODE CLASS STARTS JANUARY 5

Mechanical Code Class will be starting on January 5.  It is a 32-hour daytime class and is based on the 2009 MN State Mechanical, Fuel Gas, and Plumbing Code.  This class will also help prepare you for the Twin Cities Warm Air & Ventilation Competency Exam.  It is also very helpful for foremen and superintendents as well as detailers and estimators.  Participants in this class are required to provide their own code book.  For your convenience, code books will be available (at our cost) at the Training Center.

LOAD CALCULATION AND DUCT DESIGN CLASS

We have scheduled a Load Calculation and Duct Design Class to run the evenings of January 3, 5, 10, & 12, 2012.  Here is the class description:
  • This 16-hour class will focus on the proper method to calculate heat loss for a residential home using a Manual J workbook and spreadsheet.  Information from the spreadsheet will be used to calculate the heat loss for each room, and the entire house.  Duct design will incorporate information from the heat loss spreadsheet to design a duct system to distribute the correct amount of air to each room to satisfy the load.  NOTE: This class qualifies for NATE Continuing Education Hours.

SERVICING RESIDENTIAL FURNACE AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEMS


This 72-hour class will be starting on Saturday, December 3.  It is designed to give you some basic diagnostic and repair skills.  We will be covering service calls and safety procedures, wiring diagrams, superheat & sub-cooling and A/C diagnosing, and troubleshooting electric and gas.

PRO-10 CERTIFICATION CLASS

There are two PRO-10 Certification classes scheduled to start soon, one on November 7 and one on November 8:
  • This is a 12-hour professional skills training class that goes beyond technical training.  A few of the core topics covered are: Professionalism, Safety, Communication, Mutual Respect and Changing Perceptions.  You will receive the PRO-10 certification card upon successful completion of this class.  Some metro area job sites will soon be requiring you to have this card in order to work on that site, just like the requirement for an OSHA-30 card.  All metro area apprentices currently in school are receiving this training and getting their cards.  Don't limit your options for work, we highly recommend that you take this class now!

LAGGING CLASS

We have a Lagging Class scheduled to start on October 5 and there are still openings. Here is the class description:
  • Lagging is the process of covering and protecting insulation with sheet metal, plastic, and other materials. This 40-hour class will provide you with some much needed basic skills in this aspect of our trade. There is a tremendous amount of power plant, refinery, and other industrial type work that is in the works within Local 10 and also nationwide. These types of projects typically require a lot of lagging fabrication and installation.

INTRODUCTION TO AUTOCAD

We have an AutoCAD Class scheduled to start on October 3.  Here is the class description:
  • AutoCAD is a Computer Aided Design program used to create drawings. This 48-hour class is designed to teach you the basics of creating and working with CAD drawings. You will learn how to draw on the computer and plot out the finished drawing on a plotter. This is an excellent preparatory class for someone interested in doing detailing and planning work. Good detailers are in demand!

SERVICING ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS 1

We need a few more members to sign up for Servicing Environmental Systems 1 Class so that we can get it started soon.
  • SES 1 is an 88-hour class that will focus on the core knowledge required for servicing HVAC systems. We'll cover the basics of refrigeration systems, systems design, pressure/temperature relationships, electricity fundamentals, and controls.

TESTING, ADJUSTING, AND BALANCING AIR SYSTEMS (BASIC)

TAB 1 (Basic) Class is scheduled to start on Monday, September 26.  Here is the class description:
  • This 72-hour class is designed to introduce the basics of TAB work to an individual, with lots of hands on applications. You will learn how to set up and use flow hoods, manometers, and many other testing instruments used daily by TAB technicians. In addition, you will learn how to test and balance various types of mechanical equipment along with their related duct systems. This is an excellent class for people who want to learn how to do TAB work as well as those people currently doing it.
NOTE: TAB 1 Class will be followed by TAB 2 (Advanced), TAB 3 (Hydronic Systems) and TABP 1 (Tab Technician Test Prep).

LEED PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION CLASS

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), developed and administered by the U.S. Green Building Council, is the most widely recognized and respected third party certification program for "green" buildings. This 24-hour class is an introduction to some of the specifics of sustainability and building Green, the LEED rating system, and how to start the process to become a LEED Green Associate and on to the Accredited Professional status if desired.

MSHA (Mine Safety & Health Administration) Class Starting Soon

An MSHA Card is mandatory for a lot of the work coming available in the northern part of Local 10. This 24-hour class meets MSHA requirements for initial training of new personnel without previous mining experience. Curriculum includes: Rights of Miners, introduction to the work environment, transportation/ground control, communication systems, respiratory devices, hazard recognition, evacuation plans, and more. An OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 card is a prerequisite for this class.

RENOVATION, REPAIR, AND PAINTING (RRP) CLASS

The EPA requires that firms performing Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) on pre-1978 schools, homes and child care facilities use certified renovators who are trained to follow lead-safe work practices (working around lead-based paint).  Take this eight-hour EPA-approved class to attain this certification.

We have changed the way we send Journeylevel Class information to you.  In place of the Class Memo that you are used to receiving, you will now receive a postcard.  Different presentation, but the same information.  We have also started emailing this information, so if we have your email address you will get it the same day the postcards are mailed.
Using postcards instead of envelopes will cut our mailing costs by more than 1/2!

STAINLESS STEEL WELDING & FINISHING CLASS

Stainless Steel Welding & Finishing Class has been scheduled for Saturdays, January 15 through February 26, 2011. This 56-hour class is designed to teach you some basic skills in TIG welding and grinding and finishing stainless steel to food grade (NSF) standards. Course content will include purge welding, warpage control, bend allowances, grinding and finishing, knowledge of tools and abrasives, common practices for fab and install, etc. Two or three stainless steel projects are fabricated in this class. Time will be made available within this class for individuals who wish to learn how to weld aluminum or other metals.
